Your comments are very important to us.

The I-55/Crump Blvd. interchange is not in the Design process yet.
First, it has to go through the Environmental Phase, and currently the department is gathering public comment for the draft Environmental Impact Study (DEIS) as part of the National Environmental Policy Act.
Your comments will be submitted to Parsons, Environmental Consultant, for consideration in the Final EIS. Everyone I contacted (Memphis police and others) told me that bicycles and pedestrians were not permitted on the I-55 bridge. There was actually a barrier across the sidewalk when I tried to cross it myself. The walkway was strewn with broken glass. I've walked halfway across and cannot recommend it for anyone. I've e-mailed Joe Royer twice about it in recent years, but no response. I've been contacted by folks from out of town seeking a place to cross the MS river at Memphis. Thought I would add my two cents since you said you may stop being involved so much with cycling.

It may seem like there are a lot of 'blue pill' people out there but I don't think that's the case. I would probably seem like a blue pill person to you if you got to know me. However, I share many of your concerns stated here. The fact is everything comes to an end eventually. Let's just try to make the time we have the best for us and other people. I learned to think this way after becoming a new dad. I was constantly in fear of something bad happening to my son. I was very depressed, living in fear. I decided I don't want to live in fear. I learned that there is only so much I can do to protect him and after that he's on his own. All I can do is enjoy him and try to make him a good person.

Bike commuting to work and around town on the weekends is part of my mission to extend the time we have as the human race -- through conservation. Yes, there are risks to riding, as my wife frequently reminds me, but I know I am doing the right thing for the community and my children. That's all I can do. That's all we can do.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358330772013954003.post-50454172725507947602008-11-07T19:28:00.000-08:002008-11-07T19:28:00.000-08:00I haven't been out there in so long. So, we all had lights.

I like the law- While riding my bike at night I have nearly hit a few cyclists (On Cooper, on Southern) who were riding on the wrong aide of the road with no lights or reflectors- And, once, while driving a car, I nearly hit a cyclist at night who had no headlight (Mendenhall).

Light up the night!

An ambulance ride to the Med in Memphis costs about $550 these days-- that is more than enough to buy a decent headlight. You can get a 'be seen' headlight for about $15-20, and a decent commuter headlight starts at about $40.Cliff H.https://www.blogger.com/profile/16776404946973390418noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358330772013954003.post-35312417559898822562008-09-20T18:02:00.000-07:002008-09-20T18:02:00.000-07:00That is Memphis Law as well if you did not know. If it is really going to come down to this, then police are going to have to stop everyone with a car that doesn't use a turn signal. While I think that would be great, it's just not feasible. First, let's set up an education program that teaches cyclists WHERE and HOW to ride and motorists how to SHARE the road with cylcists.myshoeshurthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08152857715065751349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358330772013954003.post-76134817982982307122008-09-17T20:28:00.000-07:002008-09-17T20:28:00.000-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.myshoeshurthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08152857715065751349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358330772013954003.post-15064272924215142482008-09-11T18:18:00.000-07:002008-09-11T18:18:00.000-07:00Tennessee is a big state.... here in the east it i...Tennessee is a big state.... here in the east it isn't as congested as it must be in Memphis. Now in Chicago, I travel exclusively by bike and foot. Chicago is riddled with bike lanes, some appropriate, some less so. In any case, biking is a well established form of transportation here.

People feel less afraid of being hit by another car when they get out of theirs, so risk of dooring can go up. People also use the bike lane as a buffer to 'safely' pull out part way into the street before making a turn on to it, or pedestrians as a place to 'safely' flag a cab. This is especially a problem wherever parked cars block line of sight.
Bike lanes are also often on the worst part of the street, the part with potholes, drains, and broken glass, and crumbling pavement -- greater hazard to avoid, making the line of the biker less predictable to cars that are not aware of these hazards.

I've always been mystified by the statements that riding as far to the right as possible is best. It's the place on the street where you are least visible to turning cars, and cars pulling on to the street, and where these are least visible to you.

One thing that lanes do help with is developing motorist awareness, and making the rider look a little more legitimate on the whole, something which it seems that Memphis needs a lot of help with.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358330772013954003.post-20927515517910814282008-07-17T08:19:00.000-07:002008-07-17T08:19:00.000-07:00The accident rate for bike lanes is higher per mil...The accident rate for bike lanes is higher per mile than streets with no bike lanes. The reason is that bike lanes create more places where cars and bikes have to cross each other's path. 90% of car-bike crashes are at places the travel paths cross, so, naturally, more crossings equal more accidents.

That said, "Fear from the Rear" (being afraid you will get hit from behind) is huge for many cyclists, especiall new ones. Bike lanes do a decent job of helping prevent cyclists getting rear-ended, so a lot of novices and others advocate for lanes to alleviate this fear.

Educating motorists and cyclists how to share the road is, in the long run, the ideal solution, but many folks are too scared to ride without bike lanes.

It is a conundrum.Cliff H.https://www.blogger.com/profile/16776404946973390418noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358330772013954003.post-975569322073810492008-07-15T17:48:00.000-07:002008-07-15T17:48:00.000-07:00This is a good idea! Sign me up-- I would have to be at the back of the "bus" though. Most of my biking takes place on rural roads, but I would like to get more comfortable with city biking so I can take fewer vehicle trips. Cars often use the 'bike and pedestrian lane' as parking spots. They encourage bikers to ride into traffic head on for a short distance, since the other side of the road has zero shoulder. I've had cars yell at me because I wasn't riding in the bike lane, since I prefer to drive my bike with traffic. My daughter once said "don't worry, Dad, cars can't cross the white line!"
